Preparing for HOPE: What Hospices Need to Know (and How to Make Compliance Easier)

HOPE requirements

What’s all the fuss about HOPE?
Hospices everywhere are being flooded with webinars and trainings on how to complete the new HOPE reporting requirements. But let’s pause and ask the obvious question:

If your medical record is electronic, shouldn’t your EMR be smart enough to handle HOPE for you?

At mumms® Software, we believe compliance should never be an extra burden for clinicians. When HIS was introduced, our clients never had to “fill out” a HIS questionnaire — and with HOPE, nothing changes. Our SmartChart platform ensures that every HOPE-required question is already embedded in your nursing forms, worded to prevent CMS “red flag” responses.

Example:
HOPE F2200 asks about patient/responsible party preferences regarding hospitalization. CMS would likely view a response of “No” unfavorably. In mumms, the nursing form is worded so the HOPE questionnaire will never reflect a “No” — ensuring your documentation is both clinically accurate and survey-ready.

The bottom line: with mumms, HOPE compliance isn’t another task on your clinicians’ to-do list — it’s simply built into the care documentation you’re already completing.

What’s Changing with HOPE

While HOPE will feel familiar to anyone used to HIS, there are some key differences:

  • More Events to Track: HIS required tracking for 2 key events (admission and discharge). HOPE expands this to 4 events, plus symptom follow-ups.
  • New Data Fields: CMS is adding more robust demographic data collection, including expanded Race/Ethnicity categories and whether a language interpreter is needed.
  • Question Rewording for Compliance: Instead of simple yes/no questions (“Was pain screened?”), HOPE requires more detailed answers (“How was the patient’s pain assessed?”).
  • Greater Emphasis on Patient Outcomes: The focus shifts from checking boxes to documenting quality and continuity of care in measurable ways.

The Compliance Challenge

More fields. More events. More complexity. Without the right systems in place, agencies risk:

  • Missed data points that could affect compliance and reporting
  • Duplicate work from manually entering the same information in different forms
  • Staff frustration from confusing or redundant workflows

How mumms® Helps Hospices Stay HOPE-Ready

Instead of adding more work, mumms integrates HOPE into the workflows your team is already using:

  • Updated Nursing Forms: Capture both HIS and HOPE data in the same place—no separate forms needed.
  • Smart Question Wording: Forms are designed to guide compliant responses and prevent CMS “red flags.”
  • Expanded Demographics: Collect new CMS-required data directly in the patient record.
  • Visit Tracking Alerts: Notify IDG automatically when a scheduled visit can’t be completed.
  • HOPE Widget: Modeled after our HIS widget, this gives one-click visibility into event status.

Why This Matters

HOPE isn’t just another regulatory hoop—it’s part of a broader push for better, more patient-centered hospice care. By building HOPE compliance into SmartChart, mumms helps hospices:

  • Maintain compliance with minimal disruption
  • Eliminate duplicate work and reduce staff frustration
  • Shorten training time with intuitive workflows
  • Keep the focus on patients and families—not paperwork
